Mary Pratt (b. 1935), Basting the Turkey. 2003. I was not, despite my philosophical education, interested, as an artist, in abstraction. The twenty-six paintings in this exhibition revolve around three broad themes in which large, formal buildings play such a role: historical palaces and the daily lives of palace women, palaces in paradise and other imaginary dwellings of deities and immortals, and elegant pavilions erected by public officials or wealthy individuals and often commemorated in famous works of literature.

They were identified, organized and re-housed into archival enclosures, scanned, and entered into the Museum’s collections management database. The period in which Art Nouveau flourished is also known as the golden age of illustration.
