We have all kinds of dials that keep track of fuel consumption, temperature, time, distance, speed. By contrast, those hoping to restore “causality” to mathematics aimed at showing that the alleged counterexamples could easily be accommodated within the realm of “causal” demonstrations (Clavius, Barrow, etc.). An applied mathematician looks for a mathematical system (algebra, calculus, bessel functions, etc.) that may be useful is solving a difficult but real problem. Eleven axioms is a lot to digest all at once, but in fact these are all familiar properties of addition and multiplication of rational numbers that we use every day: the set Q, with the usual notions of addition and multiplication (and with the usual additive identity 0 and multiplicative identity 1), forms a field.
