Though very few tragedies are written today, the idea of the tragic – this feeling of foreboding when a hero has no escape and we are forced to recognize the powerlessness inherent in the human condition – still serves as a driving force for many playwrights and directors. In the interest of fairness, the book has two good things going for it: One, Leroux's portrayal of the opera house as a sprawling, complex maze that's a contained city is pretty incredible, and he's at his best when he's describing all the intricacies and hidden secrets of the opera house.

As court composer and keeper of the king's instruments, Purcell wrote music for state occasions—including five welcome songs for Charles II, three for James II, and six birthday odes for Queen Mary—but neither he nor his contemporaries undertook the kinds of lavish productions deifying the monarchy that composers in absolutist France were perfecting at the time. Just because you do not like something does not make it bad. It departs from Beethoven with its mosaic design: contrasting episodic sections instead of developmental motivic designs.

One famous cavatina is Beethoven's 5th movement of his String Quartet No. 13. The protagonist makes frequent mention of his own favorite writer, a galactically-famous SF author. (Venus's first edition does not mention Farmer at all!) Another example is HG Stratmann's short story "Wilderness Were Paradise Enow," which mentions plenty of SF-genre trivia. The opera is based on the mythological story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and the Trojan prince Aeneas, and her despair at his abandonment.
